Understanding Movember in 5 questions

Men die on average six years earlier than women. To bring the theme of men's health to the forefront, a group of Australian friends launched a movement of global success.

You may have already heard of Movember without knowing much about it. Why are these gentlemen allowed to grow their mustaches? How can a simple passage through the barber bring money to an association? What diseases are they? We explain everything:

Where is that from ?

In 1999 in Adelaide, Australia, a group of 80 people decided to let their mustache grow during the month of November. They took the opportunity to sell t-shirts and raise funds for charities. Some friends were inspired to found the Movember Foundation in 2003. The goal is to draw attention to male diseases and to raise funds for medical research. It is the only charity in the world to fight for men's health.

Which diseases are affected?

"Our goal is to contribute globally to ensuring that men can lead a happier, healthier and longer life." The state of men's health is in crisis, on average and worldwide, men Die six years earlier than women, "say the administrators of the French site. Mental health problems affect men more frequently than women, and prostate and testicular cancers are becoming more and more victims.

Where does this name come from ?

Movember was born from the contraction of the words "mustache" and "November".

How to participate ?

The men (Mo Bros) must register on the Movember website, then shave completely and let the mustache grow without beards or goats during the month of November. They shave again, if they wish, at the end of the month. Women (Mo Sistas) can help spread the message and can take up the "Move" sport challenge of practicing physical activity every day until the end of November. Finally, businesses, athletes, associations, community organizations and health professionals can also actively participate in the overall effort.

How does it finance research?

The mustache attracts attention, so participants can talk about Movember to their friends and collect donations for research programs on men's diseases. Events are organized around the world. In its 13 years of existence, the association has raised more than 500 million euros which have been used to finance more than 1,200 projects.
